Day 11, The Last Day

Today our group met to work on our PowerPoint presentation. We went over all the documentation we had and separated the programs into categories. After each category we placed a problem and documentation slide to touch on any problems or information we gathered about a particular program. We also tried, with no success, to look up information about some of the other programs that we did not get a chance to test in windows 7. All in all the semester I spent over at ITS was a lot of fun. I've witnessed first hand what it's like to work in the IT field. I would like to thank Mike and Dr. Harting for the opportunity to spend some time in a real IT work environment.

Day 10

The last day I was at ITS we met with three contacts from our contact list. We received several pages of documentation on two of the programs from the housing department. We also had one of the database employees come over and help us test CS Gold and Image Now. Image now worked up until the most important part, screen scraping. However, we learned that the newest support for Image Now, coming out in June, will support the fix for this problem. CS Gold worked perfectly fine. Bruce showed us how the program worked and then we used our own 800 numbers to test the program. One of the other workers in ITS helped us install Image now but like I already said we couldn't get the most important feature to work. The documentation from Scott in housing told us that TMA has not announced a new version that has support for windows 7. The other program had a version out with workarounds but he did not have the program. Instead he gave us detailed documentation from clients that he knows has windows 7 installed and has gotten Odyssey to work.

This was an article I found that had 22 common problems with windows and ways to fix it.

Day 9

I'm a few days late on posting due to the holiday weekend. My day last week was rather slow. We read all the emails that our contacts sent us. We emailed everyone on the list again if they had not emailed us back yet. We were only able to set up one appointment for Thursday this week to test some of the housing programs in windows 7. So during the rest of the time we talked with Mike about some of the programs and determined we were going to eliminate the titanium program because it is not going to be used on campus for much longer. Hopefully we get a lot of email responses this week from people willing to help us out with testing their departments programs.

Day 8

Wasn't too much to be done today. We emailed all of the contacts who are suppose to be able to get us the programs we need to test and help us test them. So far only one of them has replied that he is available the week of April 5th. We also tested the new web mail service which seemed to work fine with IE8. However, Mike gave us an email he had received about problems with IE 6 and 7 that also explained how to get around the problem. It was as easy as setting Java to not update.

Day 7

Today Mike gave us a short list of programs today, however, most of them require the help of someone who has access to test or install the software. So today we tested the programs/apps that didn't require someones help. We installed and tested Mozilla's Thunderbird which worked fine. We also tested the student side of banner and everything worked fine. The rest of the programs on the list require someone with access to test or install. For the rest of the time today we helped move some of the old tangent stuff to a new room.

Day 6

Today about 10 of us took out 30 or so old monitors from a classroom and put in new ones. They didn't sit on shelves like some of the other classrooms so we had to take the holders off and screw them in to the new monitors. After that we loaded up all the old monitors into a van and brought them back to ITS to be stored. I did not have any extra time today to work on our project.

Day 5

Today we hooked up two more of our computers to the internet using a hub in the office next store. We also installed Sophos on all four computers, updated it, and ran a scan. We had about 20 errors on each computer after that scan that we think has something to do with not being logged on as an administrator. We also added XP Mode, Chrome, and Windows Virtual PC to the rest of the machines that needed it. One of the machines that one of our group members just recently fixed needed everything added to it, luckily we had enough time to complete that today.

Day 4

Today we went through some old discs in search of office 2007 to install on our project computers. We also added open office and windows XP mode to our windows 7 project computers. Firefox was also installed so we can test things in a browser other than Internet Explorer 8. The three of us that were here developed a simple form in the open office version of excel to keep track of the programs we have installed and are going to test. We also tried to add another GB of ram to one of the computers but it beeped at us so we just stuck with the 1 GB we already had.

Day 3

Today during my normal shift hours I helped Mike with his new office. Since this wasn't necessarily giving me ITS experience I decided to stay a couple of extra hours and help unload and hook up 100 monitors to a lab and a classroom in founders hall. We had a crew of about 10-15 people so it didn't take to long. The original plan was to take out the old monitors first, but that had already been done. I was able to help hook up all the new monitors but I had to leave when we started to box up all the old monitors.

Day 2

Fridays seem to be slow so far at ITS. Our goal was to install windows 7 on the computers that the 472 class had been working on the last week or two. The problem was that Dee and I did not no where to get the software from and Mike was busy in and out of meetings so we decided to hang out around the help desk and listen in on some of the problems that they encounter. We also chatted with the help desk personel when they weren't helping a customer to learn more about what would be useful in the scripting project. Near the end of my shift we got a hold of Mike and began burning the windows 7 software to dvds for the next group to use since we were short on time.

First Day

It was a fairly uneventful day at ITS today. Interns who worked earlier in the week had completed all the tasks that Mike had for us this week. So today Dee and myself placed ITS help stickers with the phone number for ITS on smart board monitors throughout campus. We also watched Mike fix a virus problem that caused the explorer.exe file to disappear. This disabled the windows explorer making the computer disadvantages.
